Renowned NFL reporter Chris Mortensen, honored with awards, passes away at the age of 72.

Chris Mortensen, a distinguished journalist acclaimed for his coverage of the NFL during his over three-decade tenure with ESPN, passed away on Sunday morning at 72, as confirmed by his family


Since joining ESPN in 1991, Mortensen became a fixture on the network's NFL programming, including "SportsCenter" and various NFL shows. Known for breaking major news stories, he notably announced quarterback Peyton Manning's retirement from the NFL in 2016.

In recognition of his contributions, Mortensen was awarded the Dick McCann Award by the Pro Football Writers of America in 2016, honored during the Pro Football Hall of Fame's enshrinement ceremony that year. ESPN's chairman, Jimmy Pitaro, lauded Mortensen as an industry pioneer and a supportive colleague, expressing condolences to his loved ones.

Adam Schefter, Mortensen's colleague on "Sunday NFL Countdown," mourned his passing on social media, hailing him as one of sports journalism's greatest reporters and a remarkable individual.

Diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer in January 2016, Mortensen stepped back from his ESPN role last year to prioritize his health, family, and faith.

Norby Williamson, ESPN's executive editor, praised Mortensen's journalistic integrity and compassionate demeanor, emphasizing his significant impact on ESPN's culture and standards.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell described Mortensen's death as a sad day for the entire NFL community, acknowledging his relentless pursuit of news and his kindness towards others.

Peyton Manning, in an Instagram post, expressed his heartbreak over Mortensen's passing, reminiscing about their friendship and the trust he placed in Mortensen with significant career announcements. Manning extended his thoughts and prayers to Mortensen's family, bidding farewell to a true legend.
