Mad About Alice
Spectacular musical version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND for the Canal Walk Theatre this winter
Cape Town, 31 May 2018
Join Alice as she tumbles down the rabbit hole for an unforgettable adventure through Wonderland at the Canal Walk Shopping Centre (CWSC) Theatre from 23 June – 15 July 2018.
Lewis Carroll’s much-loved classic, Alice in Wonderland, returns in a spectacular original musical by award winning duo, Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer, who have presented to critical and public acclaim on stages across Europe, America and in South Africa.
Alice in Wonderland is a celebration of fantasy and adventure. Audiences will be enchanted by a Garden of Singing Flowers; learn lessons from a Caterpillar; have a mad-cap tea-party with the Mad Hatter, The March-Hare and The Dormouse and many other unforgettable characters like Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum, The White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts.
This winter, families can escape for an hour into the magical world of enchantment and wonder, and are encouraged to dress up too.
A talented, star-studded cast, together with breath-taking sets, magnificent costumes and numerous beautiful puppets, will bring Alice in Wonderland to life:
Leading the line-up of stars is Carmen Pretorius in the title role, Dean Balie stars as The White Rabbit; Bianca Flanders will return to Canal Walk as The Queen of Hearts and Gordon van der Spuy will channel his mad-cap energy into the role of the March Hare.
The annual CWSC Theatre is recognised as one of the finest family entertainment shows in the country. Earlier this year Canal Walk’s Peter Pan picked up a Fleur du Cap Theatre Award nomination for Best Production for Young Audiences. “Over 320,000 children have had their first experience of the magic of live theatre at one of our performances,” says Canal Walk Shopping Centre Marketing Manager Vanessa Herbst, “and we hope to open the door to many more this season, especially as this event is all about providing joy and supporting those in need.”
Marketing Manager for Toys R Us, Nicole Annells is as excited as Vanessa Herbst, saying: “We are thrilled to be the key sponsor for this fantastic production and have no doubt Canal Walk and the team will put on a fabulous month full of family fun and entertainment. Theatre is an important tool for developing young imaginations and Alice, is the perfect story to allow their creativity to flow.
The performance takes place during our exciting Birthdat celebration and we look forward to adding to the experience during this time.”
Give a Can and lend a hand
Since inception in 2000, the Canal Walk Theatre has raised hundreds of thousands of Rands for charity. CWSC will once again donate a percentage of proceeds from this production to the LEAP Science and Maths Schools initiative.
Extra support for this worthy cause will also be generated through the building of a giant mosaic made out of tins of food. To celebrate Madiba’s legacy, members of the public are encouraged to help transform the Centre Court at Canal Walk Shopping Centre with the building of this artwork on 18 July 2017. Theatregoers and shoppers are invited to donate-a-Rhodes Quality can to the cause, by dropping off one or more tins of food at the Toys R Us store in Canal Walk.
Merlin Norman, Marketing Manager at Rhodes Food Group, a sponsor for the Mandela Day festivities, commented: “Rhodes Food Group is committed to giving back and making a difference in our communities.
We are therefore delighted to participate again in the upcoming Mandela Day at Canal Walk, by contributing Rhodes canned food products to the Mandela Mosaic Project.”
Jump down the rabbit role to Wonderland by booking tickets through: www.computicket.com or at the venue.
Reminder: Every tin counts –bring a Rhodes Quality tin of food along and the organisers will add it to the mosaic building kit to make the image bigger and better than ever.
