The Clanwilliam Flower Show 28 August 2014

Set against a backdrop of majestic gothic architecture in the historic Clanwilliam church, the Flower Show, which will open on Thursday 28 August, and run until 5 September 2014, is the very easiest and most dramatic way to see all the flowers from the region, conveniently collected in one spot for your viewing pleasure.
The intention behind the show design is to allow the user to navigate between the different biomes of the region. The planning starts months in advance, while the site construction usually begins a month before. About four days before the opening the mountain flora and other flowers with a long life are picked and ‘planted’ in the display, while more tender plants are placed in position during the last days.
As soon as plant material gathered by our pickers is delivered at the ‘Blomkerk’, our ‘botanists’ select one or two examples of each for the specimen department, where they are kept in bottles and identified by their botanical, as well as common names.  The flowers in the exhibit are placed in water in tin cans which are buried in the sand and camouflaged with moss and sods. Permits have to be obtained from Cape Nature and signed by land-owners before the picking of flora on privately-owned or public property may proceed. All plants and flowers are picked with secateurs to prevent eradication.
Owing to the tremendous differences in topography (Cederberg, Karoo, Sandveld, Wetlands and Coastal area), Clanwilliam is blessed with an exceptional variety of wild flowers. The greater part of the district falls within the world-renowned Fynbos Biome. Certain species in the district are found nowhere else in the world. These include the yellow Leucospermum reflexum (geel Perdekop), Proteaceae cryophila (Snow Protea), blue Lachnaea filamentosa (blou Bergaster), Widdringtonia cedarbergensis (Clanwilliam Cedar tree), Aspalathus linearis (Rooibos), Yellow Sparaxis  (Botterblom), pink Cyanella alba (pienk Handjie) and the Proteaceae glabra (Kreupel Waboom). About 400 species from 32 families are exhibited at each show.
Access to the show:
Tickets will be available at the door for R30 for adults, R25 for pensioners and R5 for children. The show runs from 28 August 2014 until 5 September 2014. Opening times are from 09:00 to 18:00 daily.

Cape Town Fashion Week at the CTICC 24th July

Cape Town Fashion Week
Cape Town Fashion Week
Luxury vehicle brand Mercedes Benz and African Fashion International (AFI) will team up once again to bring you the 2014 Cape Town Fashion Week at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from Thursday, 24 to Saturday, 26 July 2014.
With the support of the Cape Town Fashion Council, SA Tourism and the Cape Town Tourism, AFI have invited selected design powerhouses to present their Autumn / Winter 2014 collections at various iconic venues around the city.

AFI’s point of distinction is the fact that designers are selected through a strict curatorial process and invited to show, versus designers’ having to pay for participation.

This year’s CTFW line-up of local designers include; Thula Sindi, Stefania Morland, Leigh Schubert, Abigail Betz ,Gavin Rajah and David Tlale, who will present their unique interpretations of the upcoming season’s hottest trends.

Other designers invited to showcase their collections include: Daniella Margaux, Doreen Southwood, Habits, Undacova, Dax Martin, Lisp, Nucleus, Lalesso, Tart, Michelle Ludek, House of Monatic and Fabiani.

When was the Castle of Good Hope built and other Q & A

Q: When was the Castle of Good Hope built?
A: The Castle of Good Hope was built between 1666-1679.

Q: Did Jan van Riebeeck build the Castle?
A: No. Jan van Riebeeck built a four pointed Clay and Timber Fort, which was situated close to the now Golden Acre in the Cape Town CBD. See plan of Fort.

Q: What materials were used to build the Castle?
A: Stone was cut from the granite outcrop on Signal Hill. Stone was further broken by men with hammers and piled up in readiness for conveyance to the new site. Blue slate and shells were transported from Robben Island. Shells were burned to obtain lime, which was mixed in ratio 1:1 with building clay for use as mortar.

Q: Who built the Castle of Good Hope?
A: Soldiers, slaves and a few Khoina undergoing punishment for having offended against the settlers and even a few volunteers.

Q: Why was the Castle of Good Hope built?
A: During long slow trips between Europe and the East, many crewmen fell ill and died, as the result of deficiency diseases caused by lack of fresh food. The VOC clearly required a replenisment station on their long voyages half-way round the world. Table Bay was chosen and Commander Jan van Riebeeck and his pioneers were to make gardens to produce fresh vegetables and trade with livestock with the indigenous Khoina, whom they were forbidden to molest or enslave. The four pointed clay and timber Fort was the first building to be erected in 1652 and was upon suggestion by Jan van Riebeeck to be replaced by a more permanent structure that could withstand the natural elements and protect its interests against possible attack from its potential enemies. Four years after Commander Jan van Riebeeck left the Cape in 1662, the Castle of Good Hope was built and completed in 1679.

Q: Who was the "VOC"?
A: It was a trading company known as the Vereenighde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) established in 1602. In that year the States General, highest authority in the United Netherlands, granted a charter that, among other powers, conferred on the VOC the right to enter into treaties in the name of the State General, to raise and maintain an army and a fleet, and to ensure good order, control and justice. The charter also provided that no other subjects of the Netherlands may trade from the east of the Cape of Good Hope to the Straits of Magellan. Control of the VOC was vested in six chambers, each of which was represented in the central controlling body, known as the Lords Seventeen. Each chamber may build trading ships, although the loss of a ship was shared by all.

Q: What are the names of the Five(5) bastions of the Castle?
A: Leerdam, Buuren, Catzenellenbogen, Nassau and Oranje. These were named after the titles of Prince William of Orange (Prins Willem van Oranje).

Q: Why are the flags flown on the Leerdam Bastion?
A: Flags were initially flown on the Catzenellenbogen Bastion as it was the closest bastion to the sea and was used for signal purposes to relay messages from the Castle and abroad. Today the flags are visible on the Leerdam Bastion and indicate the different reigns of government during the past four centuries.

Q: Was the Castle of Good Hope ever attacked?
A: No the Castle was never attacked. Battles against the British were fought at Muizenberg in 1795 and Blaauwberg in 1806.

Q: Did the sea ever wash up against the Castle walls?
A: Yes. In fact during terrible storms in the 17th century, the sea would wash-up against the Castle walls where Strand Street is currently situated. This resulted the moving of the initial Castle main entrance (current entrance to Castle Military Museum) to its present location (where the bell tower is situated). In 1745 the Imhoff Battery was built and was known as the couvre-face Imhoff. The Battery was later cut-off from the Castle by the first railway line into Cape Town, and was later demolished to make room for the highway that is today known as Strand Street.

Q: Are there ghosts at the Castle of Good Hope?
A: Various people have indicated that they have seen ghosts at the Castle and this is not uncommon. Ghosts, it is said, are likely to be found in places where their material bodies were violently torn from life, or returning to old familiar places to complete forgotten assignments. The Castle had time enough to gather a host of ghosts, and its walls and dungeons have known terrifying cruelty. These and more stories can be read in the Castle Publication ("Castle of Good Hope from 1666" by B. Johnson Barker) on sale at the Castle Military Museum.

Q: Who and what was the "Council of Policy"?
A: The Council of Policy was the highest authority of the VOC at the Cape of Good Hope. The Council discussed all problems that arose and took decisions on governing the settlement. The minutes, which include reports and decisions taken, are called the Resolutions of the Council of Policy. For nearly one and a half centuries the Council of Policy wrote millions of word on thousands of folio pages about matters concerning everyday life at the Cape. The Resolutions cover nearly every subject, for example administration, justice, law and order, education, religion, inhabitants, slaves, visitors, ships and their cargo, the military, health services, food, labour, trade (imports, exports and trading with the indigenous peoples), diplomatic relations, expeditions, weather conditions on and off shore, agricultural activities, livestock, nature conservation, land issues, loan-farms and fiscal and financial matters. The Resolutions are the main source of written accounts of pre-modern South Africa.

Cape Town - Take a look back in History

Athlone Cooling Towers

Demolition of Athlone Towers symbolises a move to cleaner energy
The landmark Athlone Cooling Towers no longer grace Cape Town’s skyline since their demolition on Sunday 22 August 2010. Both towers formed part of the decommissioned Athlone coal-fired power station commissioned in 1961 and decommissioned by the City in 2002.

“And so a piece of history has come down with a bang, which is a little sad, but there is reason to smile as cleaner energy sources will see a lower carbon, more modern, liveable and equitable city in the future”

Woodstock Beach 1940's

Woodstock beach once stretched along the front part of Woodstock, to the north of the Castle of Good Hope. It was the scene of many shipwrecks during the sailing era, when ships would be blown onto the sand by Cape Town’s notorious gales. One such gale in 1822, called the Great Storm, was commemorated in a detailed (uncredited) watercolour. The scene of devastation on Woodstock beach is impressive, showing numerous wrecked ships and debris scattered all along the beach.
A familiar landmark on Woodstock beach was Fort Knokke, part of a line of defense erected to defend the Cape from attack. A later landmark was the Castle Brewery and the Woodstock pavilion, built for bathers when Woodstock became a popular seaside village in the late nineteenth century. During the massive land reclamation of part of Table Bay to create the Cape Town foreshore in the early 1950s, Woodstock beach was unfortunately destroyed, one of Cape Town’s saddest losses. Beach Road, just in front of the Castle Brewery, and on either side of Lower Church Street, survives as a reminder of where the shoreline was once situated.

In 1879, the Cape Town City Council authorised a second tramways company, the 'City Tramways Company Limited', to operate a similar horse-drawn service, initially out to Green Point and Sea Point, and later to the Gardens and the southern suburbs.

 Tram on Adderley Street

A tram ride described in an old Cape Town guide as being “without doubt the most beautiful in the world”, the trams brought all the peninsula to Camps Bay to turn it into the region’s favourite holiday resort.

The construction was authorized by special Act of Parliament passed on 20 October 1899.
The Camps Bay Tramways Company encouraged people to travel to Camps Bay – of course by tram – by providing amusements.  These included an amusement park with a switchback railway, paddling and swimming pools, a promenade and refreshment pavilion.  Competitions such as athletics and building sand castles were organized.

The Old Cape Town Zoo
The Old Cape Town Zoo

Groote Schuur Zoo, South Africa
This old zoo can be found adjacent to the University of Cape Town in the Western Cape of South Africa. Here, the old lion’s cages can be explored and this Cape Town zoo has been the home of student concerts and art exhibitions.

Cape Town's own Spook Hill (Ghost Hill)

Spook Hill on Paarl valley Road in Somerset West (in front of Straightway Head Country House) has long boasted the creepy tales of cars left without breaks going 'uphill', leading to the myth that the hill is haunted or even a gravity hill which makes everything topsy-turvy. The myth has reportedly been debunked, and the hill is an optical illusion where what appears uphill is in fact downhill. The illusion is created by the trees on the road being slightly skew, and a gradient change midway 'down' the hill. Go test it out yourself!

Strand Golf Club Presents the Charity Cup Challenge 25 September 2014

Huis Esperanza is a home for elderly people suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Cared for by voluntary social workers and run by BADISA, a public welfare organization, there is no government funding to support the residents with essential toiletries, basic products and equipment needed to ensure hygienic and comfortable living.

We (A group of past pupils from Voortrekker and Zwaanswyk High Schools) have decided to reach out and have organized two exciting events to raise money in aid of Huis Esperanza and its residents.

Four Ball Golf Day - 25 September 2014
What could be better than a fabulous game of golf for a good cause?! Competitors will purchase a ticket that will entitle them to a round of golf competing for the Charity Cup. Dinner is included that evening followed by an auction at Strand Golf Club.

Old Boys Rugby Challenge – 27 September 2014

This exhilarating game will see the past pupils of Voortrekker High School and Zwaanswyk High School come face to face once again at False Bay Rugby Club for a grueling match not to be missed (A rivalry of over 50 years). This fun family day will feature two more phenomenal rugby matches with False Bay 1st and 2nd teams taking on Rhodes University in two ‘curtain raisers’ for the Old Boys Challenge. After these matches, the Springboks vs Australia Test match will be screened live from the Sports Bar, The Bay.

How you can help:

In order to make both these days successful we are reaching out for support in the form of Cash Donations, Service Supplies, Equipment Supply and Sponsorship towards either event. You can also enter a 4-ball team for the golf, perhaps challenging a competitor in the trade, or staff competing against one another. Perhaps you prefer to sponsor a watering hole.

Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a massive difference in aiding a better standard of living for those suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s at Huis Esperanza.

Should you wish to contribute in any way and need more information with regards to how it can benefit your business, pricing, or what sort of equipment is needed, please let me know and I will send you more information.
