Farming with Pigs in Cape Town

Our journey has taken us to Tesselaarsdal close to Caledon, Western Cape, South Africa. We originally planned to farm with sheep but the reality caught up with us and the protein in the grounds would only allow us 3 to 4 sheep per hectare. Although this was a setback for us we started looking for new ideas and eventually came to the conclusion that the answer would be pigs.

It is now 3 months later and it seems that the new venture is starting to take shape. We decided to go with the White Landrace and the Landrace specimen and our pigs are semi free range.. Once you learn all the vaccinations and the de-worming  process you can start looking forward to some more ups and downs.  We are currently running a two year plan and our hopes are high to make a profit very soon. Pig farming is not easy, but when you become familiar with the feeding formula and the hygienic process farming becomes easier.

Marketing is the one factor not to be miss calculated when you plan on farming with pigs. We did allot of research and found that you can sell directly to the public or sell them to the abattoir.

We decided on the abattoirs. The only downfall is that; it is market related so you have to stay on your toes if you want to compete and get a good price.

The feeding process will be discussed tomorrow.
