From Tesselaarsdal to Dassiesfontein

When taking a drive to Tesselaarsdal 26km South West of Caledon, one could not help to stop and view the beautiful landscape of this small village hidden in the valley of Overberg. Friendly people, green land and old houses with rich Dutch Architecture gives you the feeling that you are away from the city and never want to return.

Tesselaarsdal
I spoke to one of the residents and when he and his wife took us to another part of town to view some property I noticed that he left his house widely open for the take. "No crime here" he assured me.

After leaving Tesselaarsdal heading towards Cape Town we found this little place called Dassiesfontein farms stall. Cheese, Wine and Flowers are among the great things that you can purchase here, but what struck me the most was the unique layout of this farm stall. In the centre of the stall is an small restaurant surrounded by old black coal stoves and hundreds of small forgotten items. From herb gardens, paintings, to freshly baked bread  and old Victorian Fire places.

Friendly staff complimented our great meal, (which consisted of Bread, Jam and a pot of brewed Dassiesfontein's coffee) and this experience certainly made our road trip much shorter and highly enjoyable.

See the Namakwaland and West Coast Flowers

The greatest show on Earth...

Every year Namakwaland hosts the greatest show on earth! In this period Nature shakes off winter's bite and bursts into song, covering our vast desert spaces with flamboyant symphonies of floral splendor.

The land of the Nama is the Creator's playground, a kingdom of contrasts where dry lands are transformed into a kaleidoscope of brilliant colour in spring.

Daisies, perennial herbs, lilies, succulents, aloes and a host of other species create a tapestry of indigenous spring flowers which are unparalleled anywhere. About 4000 species of plants grow here.

Seeds of these flowers have the ability to lie dormant for a number of seasons awaiting conditions suitable for germination.

For this reason, not two flower-visits are identical and it becomes exciting to hunt for the ever new flower spectacles in different places on each successive visit.

Best Snoek Braai (Barbeque)

I am not sure where this recipe come's from, but what I am sure of is that once your tried this Snoek Braai, You will be HOOKED. This is a Cape Town Favorite among the fishermen and you can feed a family of up to 12 people.

Take a large sheet of foil, (more than double the size of the snoek) and place your snoek skin down on top of the foil. It possible use industrial foil or just fold your foil double to strengthen it.

Take a l x 500g butter and cut it into 7 blocks.
Pack the butter over the snoek and top it with loads of garlic, cheese, tomato and onion. Don't forget the salt and pepper.

Then take the florets of on large cauliflower and pack them on the snoek. Wrap the  snoek with the foil, but do not wrap it tight. There must be room for steam to build up.

Braai the snoek for about 45 min over a not to hot fire.

Why this method?

The garlic, butter and snoek blend will steam and flavor the cauliflower.
Serve with fresh butter rolls......this will will serve 8 - 12 people.
